Transitioning to the science of reading can be tough, but change is urgent.
In 2022, only 32% of fourth graders in the U.S. scored proficient or above on the NAEP reading test.
As you know, K-2 is where the foundation for children’s reading success is built (or not built…).
The science of reading lays out the path for what high-quality literacy instruction should look like, so that your students don’t end up like the 68% of kids who weren’t proficient on the NAEP.

So let’s talk about how to make this Science of Reading transition successful for you, not overwhelming…
First, as you’re making this transition, you should know that:
Effective literacy instruction based on the Science of Reading starts with a great daily and weekly schedule.
A highly-effective schedule is SO much more than a simple list of activities! An effective schedule is carefully-structured and detailed, and it:
✅ Makes it easy to cover all areas of the Science of Reading, without missing important skills that would hold your students back in their reading and writing
✅ Allows you to meet a range of student needs, without spending hours differentiating
✅ Helps with student behavior, because it’s realistic and students know what to expect (we could all use a little boost in managing behavior these days, right?!)
And it saves you an incredible amount of stress, too!
An effective schedule means you start each week feeling confident, because you know that you’re giving all your students exactly what they need to grow!
As you can see, a clear, detailed schedule that’s informed by the Science of Reading is a MUST-HAVE.
But the problem is, most teachers make one (or both) of these mistakes when creating their own literacy block schedules:
You make your schedule by listing out routines like “read-aloud” or “small group” OR you block off time for each program you have to teach.
Then, when you finish making your schedule, you realize you can’t possibly fit everything into the allotted amount of time!
So you cut things here and there. You go through your school days feeling stressed and hurried, because there’s never enough time to get to it all.
You often feel guilty and worried that your students aren’t getting all the instruction they need, because you simply don’t have enough time.
What you don’t realize is that a lack of time is not the biggest reason for your schedule troubles.
The hidden issue is that you’ve been putting too much emphasis on activities, when you really need to schedule by skills.

You try to cram too much into small group instruction, and you also try to meet with too many small groups each day.
Your heart is in the right place, because you want to differentiate!
And yes, small groups are a wonderful way to meet kids’ needs…
But not all reading skills have to be taught in a small group setting.
You don’t need to continue hurrying through so many activities and groups, or putting all these unrealistic expectations on yourself and your students.
It’s just not necessary or helpful.
These scheduling mistakes are totally understandable, but you don’t have to continue to be held back by them!
