Does this sound familiar?
After a readaloud, you ask students a comprehension question.
"It was about a bear." You prompt them to say more.
"He was in the woods." Again, you ask for more details, but all you get is…
"I don't know." Students can't answer in more detail, or explain their thinking.
And most of them can't handle higher-order comprehension questions.
Deep down, you're wondering: “Is there more I should be doing to teach comprehension? Is asking questions and filling out graphic organizers actually enough?”
The truth is, you probably didn't receive enough in-depth training on the specifics of teaching comprehension.
Most comprehension training for teachers is missing the mark.
It's too vague - lots of theory, but it doesn't show what to actually do in the classroom.
You're told to "ask higher order questions" and teach comprehension strategies - which seems too hard for K-2.
It doesn't address how to support struggling students or assess comprehension accurately.
It’s frustrating. And it’s not your fault.
Beyond Decoding gives you the clear, practical roadmap that your training never did.
This course shows you exactly what quality comprehension instruction looks like in K–2 — and how to explicitly teach students to think deeply about text, not just recall basic facts.
You'll finally understand what activities are best per the research, and how to balance comprehension instruction with teaching students how to decode.

"I’ve been to several of her virtual classes. I teach first grade, and I think they’re absolutely awesome. I have been teaching for 37 years, but every time I watch her, it helps me refresh and review what we’re teaching and how all of this works together."
